Research Monitoring and Evaluation
The purpose of research monitoring and evaluation is to evaluate both current programs as well as identify the needs of the local communities and make suggestions on how to improve and evolve them.
Pilots new programs, such as GVK, watershed and NRD, which have been mainstreamed from previous PMS initiatives.
The need
- Seva Mandir has a well-established program area with effective and efficient projects. However it is important for there to be an independent evaluation system.
- There was a lack of comprehensive research and data collection about the region where Seva Mandir works.
Impact
- Many of Seva Mandir’s programs are developed through the results of research that is coordinated and conducted by PMS, and current programs like the Village Institution Program and Natural Resource Development were initially designed and piloted by PMS as a result of their research before being mainstreamed as independent programs.
- Even with a well-established program repertoire PMS also conducts research on areas that are not always covered by existing programs, constantly piloting new projects based on research and data collected by them. The Children’s corner project is an example of such a project that was researched, evaluated and implemented by PMS.
Current Situation
PMS is currently focused on a Management Information System (MIS) that will create a computerized system of managing data collected by Seva Mandir.
They are developing a system through which data collected by each program is collectively compiled and accessible to everyone in the organization.
Challenges:
- Seva Mandir has struggled with establishing and mainstreaming their MIS system across the entire organization. The aim is to create a decentralized system where employees from any location or zone of the organization can input and access data. However the lack of technical skills has prevented that from happening. PMS is working on setting up workshops to teach and train all staff members to use the system.
