Children’s Corner
People’s Management School’s started the Children’s Corner in two urban parts of Udaipur as a safe environment for children to stay at and participate in games and activities while their parents are working.
The Need:
- The need for the Children’s corner came as a result of a Street Children’s study carried out by PMS. The study showed that most street children are out of school and roaming around in gangs without adult supervision.
- In Bhillurana (the location of one of the Corners), 90% of children, aged 5-18, were enrolled in school, but they didn’t go to school regularly. Children age 5-18.
- In Shivajinagar (the location of the other Corner), most were not in school, because they had to cross the railway track or cross the highway to get to school. Furthermore most children had to work with parents collecting garbage, selling junk and preparing things from waste materials to sell at fairs. Children had to work carrying lights on their heads.
Impact:
- At Bhillurana, children are now regularly attending we school and have, developed computer skills. They are learning life skills like teamwork and leadership and receive help in completing their homework.
- In Shivajinagar basic teaching classes were begun because literacy was non-existant and children couldn’t even write their own names. There are now 10 children in school now, with 5 having passed 1st standard.
- Given the poor levels of education and the lack of facilities a Shiksha Kendra was started at Shivajinagar
Current Situation:
The Children Corner’s and Urban Shiksha Kendra are now being merged into the Urban Block as independent programs.
Future Challenges:
- There needs to be more community participation and assistance in both the Children’s Corner as well as in the general development of their community.
- There are too many children attending the Corner’s.
- Convincing the community to send they children to school.
