Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
Seva Mandir’s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project provides 20,000 households with approximately 40,000 improved cookstoves, resulting in the reduction of carbon emissions and fuel wood useage.
The Need:
- Current cooking stoves in rural areas are kerosene powered and used in small cramped environments. This is both expensive (due to the cost of kerosene canisters) as well as dangerous (the fumes from burning kerosene).
- Current cook stoves are also harmful to the environemnt requiring the burning of fossill fuels.
Current Situation
This project is currently in its pilot stage being run in 20,000 households in Kherwara Block.
Impact:
- The improved cookstoves provide safer and cheaper methods of cooking.
- They reduce carbon emissions and create more environmentally friendly cooking appartus’
- Women are actively participating this project.
- There is a greater understanding about climate change and its challenges.
Future Challenges:
The biggest challenge in this project, particulalry given the large number of households currently involved and the large number that will start participating, is monitoring and running the project suddessfully over a long term period of time.
