Maternal Health

The Maternal Health program reduces maternal mortality and morbidity amongst rural communities by developing better maternal health-related norms at the community level.

The need:

  • 56% of women anemic. (Health Care Delivery Survey by MIT/Vidya Bhawan Society, 2003-04)
  • Only 23% of pregnant women receive the full set of three antenatal check ups.
  • Only 32.9% deliveries are institutional deliveries. (DLHS-3, 2007-08)
  • Only 12% of eligible couples use of birth spacing methods. (DLHS-3)
  • Services for safe abortion and reproductive health problems still lacking

Seva Mandir’s response:

  • Working with 312 trained  Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), across 152 villages to ensure safe maternal health in the communities.
  • Comprehensive Obstetric Care Insurance to enable women at risk access institutional and specialized maternal health-care care.  There are currently 364 women insured in the program across 44 villages in the blocks of Kotra and Kherwara.
  • Camps for anti-natal care are held once a month in 125 hamlets.

Impact:

  • There have been positive changes in practices around maternal health  with an increased number of pregnant women accessing antenatal & postnatal care, improved number of institutional deliveries and deliveries conducted by trained TBAs. Furthermore TBAs are not just assisting in deliveries but also helping women navigate through the complexities of the health system.
  • The Comprehensive Obstetric Care Insurance, has led to an increase in pregnant woman accessing antenatal care from accredited health institutions.
