Shiksha Kendra

Shiksha Kendras, or Non-Formal Education Centers, provide quality education to out of school children from disadvantaged and marginalized backgrounds in remote rural villages. These centers are single teacher schools providing education to children up to 3rd Grade. The curriculum at these centers is a well-researched and developed pedagogy taught by an intensively trained and motivated local instructor.

 

Current Status:

  • Seva Mandir runs and supports 188 Shiksha Kendras in 186 Villages
  • There are 5694 (3288 Boys and 2406 Girls) enrolled students taught by 208 teachers.

 

Impact:

  • Every year on average, 20% of the children attending Shiksha Kendras, graduate from the centers and are able to read and write independently and with comprehension.
  • In 2009-2010 24% of the children attending the Shiksha Kendras were made literate
  • After studying at the Shiksha Kendra centers many students enroll formal schools to further pursue their education.  Between 2009 and 2010, 18% of children attending Shiksha Kendra, enrolled in government schools.
  • Students studying in government schools who have previously studied in Shiksha Kendras have a higher attendance and retention rate than their peers who had not studied in Shiksha Kendras.
  • Along with the improvement of children’s education, there has also been a major improvement in teacher performances.  Teachers are now attending regular training’s and participating in a certification course. 16% of teachers have gone on to pursue higher education.
