Seasonal Residential Learning Camps

While Shiksha Kendras have emerged as an important way to provide increased accessibility to quality education in remote villages, there are still some children who are not attending any type of school. Most of these children migrate seasonally to work and their income is critical for household survival. In order to address the needs of these children, Seasonal Residential Learning Camps were started, where children attend a series of three 60-day camps over the course of a year, and gain basic literacy and math skills.

Current Status:

  • 3 60-day camps are organized over the course of a year
  • Around 550-600 children (approximately 200 per camp) are reached through the schools in a year

Impact:

  • Every year, 20 % of all attending children are made literate through attending the camps.
  • In 2010-2011, 32% of children attending the camps were made literate.
  • In 2008-2009 102 out of 202 tracked children that had attend the 3 camps that year had enrolled and were attending a local government school.
  • The education department has succeeded in increasing the number of girls that attend the camps.
