Education
Seva Mandir’s Education Program aims to build an understanding on quality education, generate community demand for quality education and enables the youth to become responsible citizens and a catalyst for change.
Specific objectives of the programme are:
1. To ensure quality education for rural and tribal children from the ages of 6 to 14.
2. To deepen the understanding of quality education for children and increase community demand for it.
3. To enable youth to become responsible citizens and agents of change.
The Need:
- Access to quality education is a major development challenge for poor and marginalized communities in the region where Seva Mandir works.
- One third of children in the 6-14 years age group are out of the school and dropout rates remain high, particularly for girls.
- While the number of schools has increased the frequent teacher absenteeism, poor pedagogical methods, lack of required materials and inadequate infrastructure all contribute to low attendance in the region.
- Migration is also a major issue contributing towards the low attendance and high drop-out rates.
Our intervention:
To address the needs of community the education program runs interventions that work towards ensuring education for out-of-school children and empowering the communities to collaborate with the government and secure better education for their children.
Impact:
Seva Mandir’s experience in implementing education programme has resulted in a deep understanding of what it takes to make quality education available in the remote areas. They have developed a real alternative model of primary level education in collaboration with the community with which they work. This places the organization in a unique position to understand why government’s efforts have proved frustrating, and offers critical insights into what kind of solutions may be required to address the problem
Future Challenges
- Migration is a major issue and prevents a large number of children from being able to attend school.
- There are a large number of cultural and societal constraints with girls receiving education, especially after primary school.
- The Right to Education Act, which is a major government initiative, posses a major challenge for our work as it will make it illegal to run non formal education centers ( in Seva Mandir’s case, the SK’s and Camps).
- Creating equal opportunities and participation of adolescent girls in all areas.
- There is a large turn over of Youth Resource Center facilitators. Though this is due to the enhancement of their skills through capacity building, a positive sign for the Youth program, it creates many challenges in running the centers.
