Urban Block
Udaipur city is spread across 37 square kilometers. According the census 2001 the population is about 550,000 with 53% men and 47% women. The literacy rate is 76.28% including 83% men and 72% women are literate. There are 11 Panchayats in Udaipur with a majority of schedule caste and schedule tribes residing.
The beautiful and the most popular destination of Asia, Udaipur city is also plagued by the challenges that result from rapid urbanization elsewhere. A large number of people in search of labor work migrate into the city from remote rural areas on a regular basis. Many of these people stay back in the city. As a result the number of slums have increased in the last few years. There are about 56 urban settlements (slums). Seva Mandir has been working with these slums in the city for the last five years.
A recent survey conducted in a few slum areas where Seva Mandir is operational, it was observed that 64% people have pucca house (built with concrete and bricks). Only 30% people have access to clean drinking water and 76% households are electrified.
Urban block focuses on the following programs -
1) Education
2) Building People’s Institutions
3) Women and Child Development
