Delwara Heritage and Community Walk

ancient heritage. contemporary lives.

Delwara is a former royal principality 40 minutes from Udaipur. It has a rich heritage including an 18th century palace, 1000 year old Jain temples, stunning step wells, and a thriving crafts tradition. Unlike other heritage walks, ours goes beyond physical heritage to offer a window into small town India. It asks and answers questions about caste, women’s rights, drinking water, livelihoods and other aspects of the transformative development and social change brought about by the people of Delwara and Seva Mandir, one of India’s leading nonprofit organizations. See our brochure here.

About Us

Social Responsibility

The walk is an initiative of Seva Mandir, a development nonprofit organization founded in 1968 which currently works with 360,000 people across 700 villages around Udaipur. Seva Mandir has worked in partnership with Delwara’s people since 1988. Together, they have made real and sustainable improvements to caste relations, women’s rights, access to water, livelihoods, sanitation, governance and preservation of heritage. The Walk was started in 2013 by Seva Mandir’s youth center in Delwara, and seeks to not only provide our guides local employment but to make them more informed and active citizens.

Who We Are

All our guides are young adults from Delwara itself, and speak excellent English, Hindi and Mewari. They have been certified to lead the walk following hundreds of hours of training and research, mostly through oral interviews with members of Delwara’s community. Each walk is distinguished by the guides own stories, opinions and relationships.
