Seva
Mandir through its Volunteers Program provides an excellent
opportunity to those who care for humanity and want to contribute
in some way, but are new to the field of rural development.
The volunteers or interns get an insight into projects and activities undertaken with rural communities towards improving their quality of life. At the same time, they are often able to contribute to supporting and improving these activities to various degrees.
Volunteers
or Interns are individuals from across the world who are
either in their gap year and seek to gain work and life
experiences before resuming studies or those who have been
involved in a particular trade/work but are on a quest to
learn something new and wish to contribute to society.
There are also students from academic institutions
who
are required to undergo internship with organizations
like Seva Mandir as part of their curriculum, who serves as interns. Seva Mandir
has been hosting over 60 interns each year from leading
institutes across India including IRMA, TISS, ICFAI, IIFM etc.
We have had interns in the past from Universities abroad including Norway, Yale,
Columbia, Duke, St. Mary’s etc.
Seva Mandir also received interns from internship programmers of the National Foundation of India, Volunteer Services Overseas, America india Foundation (AIF) and Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD, USA).
Seva
Mandir hosts over 100 volunteers/interns every year. The
volunteers and interns become a part of various activities
and get to contribute in various ways. For example the volunteer
could help us by working with our team on regular activities,
conducting research, undertaking independent assignments,
developing training modules etc.

Seva
Mandir affords its volunteers a rare opportunity—to
be directly involved in the work of development at
the grassroots level. With significant reserves of
patience and persistence, the rewards of seizing such
an opportunity are significant. Though the learning
curve is steep and frustrations abound, the experience
can be an invaluable and fulfilling one. However,
remember that boldness and assertiveness are a volunteer's
most rewarded traits; waiting for things to move forward
will only serve to demoralize. Above all, be flexible:
your experience will never unfold as you imagine it
should, but open yourself to the possibilities waiting
in the detours.
When
I came to Seva Mandir, I wasn’t really sure
what to expect. I had no idea that it was such a well-established
NGO, which has been doing development work in rural
Rajasthan for over forty years. I was given an assignment
within the Health Department, which involved documenting
the experiences of village youth who had participated
in Adolescent Health Camps. I would use the stories
and pictures that I collected to produce an informative
brochure that would illustrate the importance of the

I
had an excellent overall experience at Seva Mandir.
I learned a lot about myself and grassroots development
through the work I did and the people I met. Early
on, it was really challenging getting my project
started while simultaneously adjusting to everyday
life in India. In the end, however, I got my main
project going, and actually gained a lot of valuable
experience and insight into the organization by
getting involved in a variety of side projects.
For me personally, the three most important keys
to a rewarding stay at Seva Mandir are patience,
perseverance, and initiative. It is easy to feel
a bit lost and frustrated from time to time, but
I think that anyone with enough self-motivation
and curiosity will enjoy their time at Seva Mandir.
