Friends of Seva Mandir – UK

Friends of Seva Mandir was set up in 1989 as a registered charity under the patronage of Countess Mountbatten and is based in London. The Friends help the poorest communities in Rajasthan by supporting the work of Seva Mandir. The Friends was run entirely by volunteers until 2010 and is supported by its Officers who act as Trustees and are responsible for preparing a yearly financial statement, maintaining proper accounting records and for safeguarding the assets of the charity.

The Friends has an active Events Committee who enthusiastically organise different events to raise funds for Seva Mandir. In the past these have included an Indian Dance and Music Evening at the Nehru Centre, an evening entitled ‘The Mountbattens in India’, ‘An evening with Kipling’ hosted by author David Gilmour, lectures on topics of Indian import as well as many others. These events were fully sponsored meaning that 100% of the funds raised could be sent directly to benefit Seva Mandir’s projects in Rajasthan.

The Friends have also secured a number of grants from trusts and foundations including the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation for a drinking water project. Again, 100% of these funds were sent directly to projects in Rajasthan to ensure that there was the greatest impact possible to the projects where the funding was directed. The Friends have also been instrumental in assisting Seva Mandir with further applications for project funding which has resulted in quite a number of successful applications including Shell.
