The Rafe Bullick Memorial Foundation has been instituted in memory
of Rafe Bullick who was killed in an anti-tank mine explosion on
10th October 2004 along with his colleague Nourredine el Tayeb in
the Umbarro region of North Darfur. Both were on their way to help
more than 45,000 people who had been displaced by the fighting in
Darfur.
Rafe
Bullick first came to Seva Mandir in 1997 and continued to return
nearly every year after, becoming inseparably and closely involved
with the life and routine of Seva Mandir. The bullick family has
provided Seva Mandir with the great privilege of managing the efforts
of the memorial foundation. Through this Foundation, the Bullick
family wishes to continue the work and ideals which Rafe held dear
and worked for all through his life. Although fate took young Rafe
away from this world in a cruel manner, the Bullick family hopes
that by continuing the work Rafe started among the needy and the
disadvantaged, peace and justice may be ensured in the lives of
at least some people in some parts of the world. Rafe was truly
a global citizen. He consciously chose not to go in for an academic
career and opted to travel widely and work for social development
in the UK, Africa and India even from an early age.
A firm believer in the idea that life was an opportunity
not to be missed, Rafe stands even taller in death. People that
knew or came into contact with Rafe, could not help but be energized
by the enthusiasm and strength that he so commonly passed on to
other people. The associations that Rafe developed have now become
powerful memories in their minds that continue to bring people together
so that they can work together for a shared future. The Rafe Memorial
Foundation is an effort to keep this memory alive so that Rafe may
continue to live among the people whom he loved and served with
unfailing passion.
